Ask “Mr. Music”
Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 10, 2018

DEAR JERRY: Before her big hit "Baby Baby," how many Top 100 hits did Amy Grant have, including duets?
—Nina Gomez, Jacksonville, Fla.

DEAR NINA: Though regarded as the queen of contemporary Christian music for many years earlier, Amy Grant didn't find herself on the Top 100 until May of 1985. Her chart debut single, "Find a Way, found its way into the Top 40, eventually peaking at No. 28. It remained on the charts for a little over four months.

Her follow-up, Wise Up," didn't fare quite as well, reaching only No. 66; however, at about the same time, Amy's duet with Peter Cetera, "The Next Time I Fall," raced right to No. 1.

Grant didn't chart again for two years, when "Lead Me On" barely made the Hot 100, peaking at No. 96. Amy had no other chart hits in the 1980s.

Her next, and top-selling hit single, "Baby Baby," came along in early 1991. This was her first solo No. 1 hit, and the first of four consecutive Top 5 tunes, the others being "Every Heartbeat" (No. 2), "That's What Love Is For" (No. 2), and "Good for Me" (No. 4).

Amy's other chart hits in the 1990s are: "I Will Remember You" (No. 14); "Lucky One" (No. 11); "House of Love" (with Vince Gill, who she soon married) (No. 37); "Big Yellow Taxi" (No. 67); and "Takes a Little Time" (No. 21).

DEAR JERRY: My father-in-law asked me to ask you if there was a record in the 1950s about a one-cent post card.

He remembers it as being a 78 rpm by an old time country singer, similar to pioneers like Tex Ritter and Ernest Tubb.

Can you help me refresh his memory?
—Chuck Morgan, Salt Lake City

DEAR CHUCK: Refreshing memories is one of my more useful capabilities.

Chances are good he recalls Jimmie Skinner's "Send Me a Penny Postcard," issued on 78 and 45 speed (Capitol 1889). Released either in December 1951, or January 1952, "Postcard" is backed with "'Tis Sweet to Be Remembered," but neither side charted.

You didn't say he was looking for the record, but if so this disc would likely be available for under $10.
