Ask “Mr. Music”
Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 11, 2019

DEAR JERRY: After playing Donnie Osmond's "Go Away Little Girl" the dee jay on the radio at the time said that Donnie, who was 13 at the time, was probably the youngest person to ever have a No. 1 record.

Whether that is true or not, it motivated me to ask you who else topped the charts before they turned 17?
—Kelly Dixon, Eagle, Idaho

DEAR KELLY: Donnie is but one of three 13-year-old boys with a No. 1 hit, but knowing their exact ages (years / months / days) at the time their song reached No. 1 is the only way to list them in proper order.

And so, here we go:

1. Little Stevie Wonder (b: May 13, 1950), 13 years, two months, 28 days when "Fingertips, Part 2" reached No. 1 (August 10, 1963).

2. Donnie Osmond (b: December 9, 1957), 13 years, nine months, two days when "Go Away Little Girl" reached No. 1 (September 11, 1971).

3. Little Jimmy Boyd (b: January 9, 1939), 13 years, 11 months, 13 days when "I Saw Mommy Kissin' Santa Claus" reached No. 1 (December 27, 1952).

4. Laurie London (b: January 19, 1944), 14 years, two months, 26 days when "He's Got the Whole World (In His Hands)" reached No. 1 (April 14, 1958).

5. Little Peggy March (b: March 8, 1948), 15 years, one month, 19 days when "I Will Follow Him" reached No. 1 (April 27, 1963).

6. Brenda Lee (b: December 11, 1944), 15 years, seven months, seven days when "I'm Sorry" reached No. 1 (July 18, 1960).

7. Tiffany (b: October 2, 1971), 16 years, one month, five days when "I Think We're Alone Now" reached No. 1 (November 7, 1987).
