Ask “Mr. Music”
Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 18, 2019

DEAR JERRY: For the first time ever on the radio, I heard a vocal version of the "Peter Gunn" TV theme. It is the same music that was a pop hit for Henry Mancini.

Unfortunately, the dee jay didn't announce the singer, who was a woman. Any idea who sang it? Also, nowhere in the lyrics did I hear any mention of Peter Gunn.

How many other popular 1950s and '60s instrumentals were also recorded by a singer?
—Anne Russell, Springfield, Mass.

DEAR ANNE: Obviously we can't include every song, but we'll start with around 350, where one or both versions made a chart.

Instrumentals are listed first, alphabetical by title, followed by the artist. If that year differs from the vocal, it will be before the hyphen, but when both have the same year it appears just once, at the end of the line.

Other versions exist for most of these songs, but we are listing only one in each category. As for which, it's whatever seemed most appropriate.

Not all instrumentals are music only, so we will allow occasional words, grunts, or shrieks, but not full verses. Ergo, "Topsy," "Tequila," and "Quiet Village" are okay, but "So Rare" (Tommy Dorsey), "Unchained Melody" (Les Baxter), and "Tonight" (Ferrante & Teicher) have way too much singing.

Oh yeah, "Peter Gunn" is on the list:
