FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 1, 2019

DEAR JERRY: I know there are somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 versions of "Louie Louie" out there.

Not all of those were U.S. issues, and many were not on singles.

As far as I know, the only significant, nationwide hit of "Louie Louie," was by the Kingsmen, but were there others that also made the U.S. Top 100?

My other question is, of all those "Louie Louie" singles that failed to reach the Top 100, how many still appeared on one or more regional radio station surveys?
—Mick Dillinger, Lancaster, Calif.

DEAR MICK: Sounds interesting, so let's give it a go.

First, here are all of the "Louie Louie" singles, often shown as "Louie, Louie," with their Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World peak positions:

January 1964 - The Kingsmen (Wand 143) Cash Box No. 1; Record World No. 1; Billboard No. 2
April 1966 - Travis Wammack (Atlantic 2322) Cash Box No. 88
November 1966 - The Sandpipers (A&M 819) Billboard No. 30; Record World No. 30; Cash Box No. 35
October 1978 - John Belushi (MCA 40950) Billboard No. 89; Cash Box No. 91; Record World No. 91

Chronologically based on the specific charts referenced, here are those that missed the national Top 100, but managed to rank — sometimes quite high — on one or more regional surveys.

This list is based entirely on the regional surveys in my collection, so it is certain there are many others that could be added:

November 12, 1957 - Richard Berry and the Pharaohs (Flip 45-321) KOL Seattle, No. 31
April 17, 1961 - Rockin Robin Roberts (Etiquette 1) KJR Seattle, No. 1
April 20, 1961 - Rockin Robin Roberts (Etiquette 1) KOL Seattle, No. 3
