Ask “Mr. Music”
Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 13, 2019

DEAR JERRY: I am tempted to start a collection of the Capitol of Canada, orange and yellow swirl 72000 series by the Beatles.

Before taking the plunge, will you please tell me how many there are in that series, and a price range estimate based on somewhat recent sales?
—Chris Hoffman, Buffalo, N.Y.

DEAR CHRIS: It's hard to say whether being relatively close to Ontario would assist you in this quest, should you take on the challenge, though being so near doesn't seem likely to work against you.

There are only nine Beatles singles in the 72000 series, all issued in 1963 and '64, and each one is a coupling of songs not issued on Capitol singles in the U.S. (mostly in the 5000 series).

Of the nine, all but two (72133 and 72144) were released in the U.S. on Vee-Jay/Tollie or Swan.

Each has an estimated NM price range based on all available auction results and set sales:

Capitol 72076: "Love Me Do"/"P. S. I Love You" (1963) $300-$500
Capitol 72090: "Please Please Me"/"Ask Me Why" (1963) $100-$200
Capitol 72101: "From Me to You"/"Thank You Girl" (1963) $200-$400
Capitol 72125: "She Loves You"/"I'll Get You" (1963) $50-$100
Capitol 72133: "Roll Over Beethoven"/"Please Mister Postman" (1963) $75-$125
Capitol 72144: "All My Loving"/"This Boy" (1964) $75-$125
Capitol 72146: "Twist and Shout"/"There's a Place" (1964) $75-$125
Capitol 72159: "Do You Want to Know a Secret"/"Thank You Girl" (1964) $300-$500
Capitol 72162: "Sie Liebt Dich (She Loves You)"/"I'll Get You" (1964) $200-$400
