Ask “Mr. Music”

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 10, 2017

DEAR JERRY: The last time I heard "You," by Rita Coolidge, the announcer said it was one of two different Top 10 songs in 1978 with that title. What was the other "You"?

Also, were there any two Top 10 records in the 20th century with the same title, but different lyrics?
—Shawn Millington, Owensboro, Ky.

DEAR SHAWN: Here are the expedited answers to both questions, followed by more in-depth research.

For five weeks in August and September, Rita Coolidge and the McCrays were both on the charts with "You."

From 1949 to the end of the century, only once did I find two different songs in the Top 10 with the same title.

Beginning with the week ending June 23, 1990, Wilson Phillips had "Hold On" at No. 4, down from No. 1 two weeks before, and En Vogue's "Hold On" was No. 8, and rising.

What happened the following week (June 30) is every bit as rare as a total solar eclipse.

No. 5 was "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips and No. 6 was "Hold On" by En Vogue.

Even better than the Top 10, both were in the Top 6, and in consecutive positions.

Listed here are seven titles in order of most cumulative weeks charted by all the artists named. This does not include releases after 1999.

The individual recordings are chronological, with label, number, peak chart position, and weeks charted. Subtitles are disregarded.

All are 45 rpm singles unless noted. Exceptions are indicated as such: Cassette Single (CS), Compact Disc Single (CD), or Maxi-Single (MS).
