Ask “Mr. Music”

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17, 2018

DEAR JERRY: Nowhere, on or off the Internet, do I find a listing of Top 100 tunes with the exact same title, but are completely different songs. And because there are so many with just a one word title, skip those and count only ones having two or more words. Also, limit the search to vinyl rock era only (1955-1989). Thank you!
—Evan Sterling, Redondo Beach, Calif.

DEAR EVAN: Like you, I also cannot find this specific info. Yet it does seem to be a worthwhile project, albeit a lengthy one.

The only exception I'll make to the "exact same title" rule is an often meaningless comma, or other non-letter. For example, "Baby, I Love You" is treated the same as "Baby I Love You," and "Hey! Baby same as "Hey Baby."

We'll go alphabetically by song titles, covering "W"-"Z" this week ("A"-"V" appear in previous columns).

Since there were no qualifying titles for either "X" or "Z," and not wanting to omit those letters, I supplied singles that met the critera, except for being among the Top 100. A few of those either hovered below the Top 100, or made one or more regional charts. I just couldn't have a 24 letter alphabet.

It took 10 weeks to complete this project, that now contains nearly 1,800 listings. Whew!
